- Style
- A West Coast post-war residential vocabulary descended from the Case Study program: low-pitched gables or flat roofs with broad overhangs, post-and-beam bays, and walls of full-height glazing alternating with warm wood and low brick spandrels. The language is optimistic, indoor-outdoor, and confident in its modernism; ornament is rejected in favor of clear structure and material expression. The register is sun-bright, casual, and aspirational.
- Scene
- The space opens onto a gentle canyon hillside where native chaparral — manzanita, ceanothus, agave — comes up close. A flagstone terrace cantilevers toward a kidney-shaped pool; a poured-concrete walkway threads through planting to a slim flat-roofed carport. The setting is suburban but generously sized, with dry hills and deep-blue sky beyond every opening.
- Lighting & Atmosphere
- Late-afternoon golden hour with strong, slightly warm direct sun raking across surfaces, casting clean linear shadows from rafter tails. The sky is deep blue, the air dry and clear. Highlights catch polished concrete and the still water of the pool. The atmosphere is confident and leisurely, like a Saturday in early autumn in the canyon.
- Materials & Textures
- Vertical tongue-and-groove redwood or cedar, stained warm honey, leads against low brick or split-face stone spandrels in warm browns with raked joints. Steel posts are bright white or matte black. Sliding glass runs full-height on thin anodized-aluminum frames with minimal mullions. Floors are polished concrete; ceilings are exposed wood with darker stained beams.
- Entourage & Activity
- Honey wood, warm brick, white-painted steel, and accents of butter yellow and aqua carry the palette, with silver-green agave and deep-blue pool water. Lounge chairs in tan leather and walnut sit on the terrace; a long vintage convertible waits under the carport. One or two figures relax poolside with magazines and tall glasses. Any marker is a backlit stainless house number. The mood is early-1960s optimism.
